Safe, cheap hotels on the ocean front in Va beach?

Hi guys! I'm looking to take a vacation with some of my friends to Va Beach, Virginia. We're looking for a safe, cheap hotel that's close to the beach. Most all of them are good along the ocean front, but be willing to pay for them. I hope you aren't planning on coming this weekend (Aug 1-3). The rates are going to be sky high because they are doing the pony round up from Assateague Island swimming to Chincoteague Island yesterday (Tuesday) and doing the pony auction today (wednesday). (The pony swim is about 2 hours from Virginia Beach, but people travel pretty far to see it) You won't find a hotel room from Dover Delaware to into North Carolina.
