Good but cheap hotel in Los Angeles?

I live in the UK and will be going to LA for 3 nights in september on my way back from a trip to New Zealand. Can anyone recommend a good but fairly cheap hotel i could stay in thats fairly close to the airport but is also in a good location to all the 'touristy' things :) Any websites or anything that would be good to book and stuff would be appreciated too.

...also, we are looking to visit newport in the OC at some point during the stay (im a huge fan of the OC TV show and just wanna see the real thing. Sad i no but as im there i might as well). How is the best way to get there?

thanks in advanceGood but cheap hotel in Los Angeles?
Try the Hollywood Roosevelt as it is a hip scene right on Hollywood Blvd. Celebrities even frequent the bars and clubs inside the hotel. Book through a travel website I.E. Orbits... and you should be able to secure a rate around $140

Also the only Transpo to Orange that won't cost a fortune would be the metrolink train. Take the LA subway which is right across the street from Roosevelt to Union station and hop the metrolink there... Goodluck and enjoy your stay here in LA.Good but cheap hotel in Los Angeles?

Stay with my friend. He's a male nurse. Well, he probably wouldn't appreciate that.

You will find something good and cheap for sure.
You don't want to stay close to the airport. It's like a sewer with loads of crime.
If you want to visit ';The O.C.'; locations when you're in Southern California, you might want to know that the show wasn't really filmed Newport or even in Orange County (except for those aerial shots). Most of it was filmed in the South Bay area (Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes), with some scenes filmed in Malibu.

You can find a list of the actual OC filming locations (even a map of them all) at http://www.seeing-stars.com/OC
Check out TripAdvisor.com to get reviews of the hotels in Los Angeles. They also have a great forum that can suggest some local interest points to visit.

Hotwire and Priceline are great places to get big discounts on hotels. Before you start, make sure you check out http://myfavdeals.com/blog/?p=27. There's a tip on how you can find out which hotel you are getting through Hotwire or Priceline before you purchase.
